Refrain from chewing on hard objects like ice, hard candy, or the back of a pen. How Long Is the Recovery Dental Crown Placement?
The typical recovery period from a dental crown placement is a few days. After the initial numbing effect of the anesthetic wears off, patients may feel some inflammation or irritation in the area around the procedure site. These effects generally resolve on their own within a few days.
You may also want to rinse with warm salt water a few times a day to reduce swelling. Patients may also experience an adjustment period as they become accustomed to the new crown in their mouth. It may feel different or take some time to adjust to the new feeling when biting down.
What Foods Should I Avoid with Dental Crowns?
Permanent dental crowns are solid and resilient. However, you can protect your crown and natural teeth by avoiding certain habits, like chewing on ice, hard candies, or popcorn kernels.
When eating particularly sticky or crunchy foods, try to chew away from the crown, if possible. Taking extra care when eating, in general, can help to protect your crown from cracking or falling out completely.
Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?
Many dental procedures have a poor reputation for being painful. However, advancements in technology allow most practices to be virtually painless and definitely less painful than a broken or decaying tooth.
The entire process of receiving a dental crown is performed under local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel anything but pressure.
